Protect Colorado's Water
“Here is a land where life is written in water,” wrote Colorado’s late Poet Laureate, Thomas Hornsby Ferril, whose words are now written in the rotunda of our state capitol building.
Water is central to our economic livelihood, and our survival. We have seen the impact of drought and water restrictions across the state. We need a leader who will work with all states to protect and conserve our most precious resource.

OBAMA AND McCAIN ON THE COLORADO WATER COMPACT: KNOW THE FACTS
John McCain I don't think there's any doubt the major, major issue is water and can be as important as oil. So the compact that is in effect, obviously, needs to be renegotiated over time amongst the interested parties," McCain said while on his way to the Aspen Institute. "I think that there's a movement amongst the governors to try, if not, quote, renegotiate, certainly adjust to the new realities of high growth, of greater demands on a scarcer resource. | Barack ObamaOpening up the Compact would likely only result in undermining rights that have been long-held by the seven Colorado River basin states. At a minimum, it would pit the seven basin states against one another in extended negotiations, instead of facilitating cooperative efforts to address the significant water supply challenges facing the arid west. That’s not the type of leadership we need. Senator Obama will respect the work the seven states have done and honor the Compact. |
